But Scorsese’s film is less a story of the ’70s mafia than an epic history lesson on how Las Vegas became the playground for enormous corporate gamblers and how it continues to reinvent itself. With its bravura set pieces and judicious display of showmanship, Casino has an air of authenticity that is tempered by the director’s ambivalence about the genre’s truly hellacious violence (a torture-by-vice sequence involving a popped eyeball was trimmed to avoid an NC-17 rating).
