Poker is a card game involving betting between players and the placement of chips in a pot. Each player must place an initial bet (the amount varies by game, in our games it is typically a nickel) before being dealt cards. Once the cards are dealt players must then either call or raise any bets placed by other players in order to continue playing their hand. The highest hand wins the pot.

There are a number of different variants of poker and each has its own rules. Generally the game is played from a standard deck of 52 cards with four suits, with the rank of each suit being: Ace, King, Queen, Jack. Some variants of the game use multiple decks or add cards called jokers to increase the number of possible combinations.

The highest natural hand is a Royal Flush, which consists of five consecutive cards of the same suit, such as A-K-Q-J-10-9. Other high hands include a Straight (five cards in order, such as 5-6-7-8-9-2) and Three of a Kind (2 distinct pairs of cards). The high card breaks ties.

Professional poker players analyze the results of previous hands and study the mathematical odds of winning to determine the best course of action for their own hand. They use tools from areas as diverse as probability theory, psychology, and game theory to develop a strategy that maximizes their chances of making a profit. However, this strategy is not foolproof and only about 10 to 15 percent of poker players make money at the game.
