Poker is a card game played by two or more players and involves betting. It has become a major casino game and a wide variety of strategies have been developed to increase the chances of winning. Although there is some element of luck in poker, over time the application of skill can eliminate much of the variance involved.

In most forms of poker the object is to win the pot, the sum of all bets made during a deal. The pot may be won either by having the highest-ranking hand or by bluffing other players into calling your bets for various strategic reasons. It is customary for the amount of money that can be raised by a single player to be limited to the number of chips in the pot at the time the raise is made, or if no limit is used, by the number of chips that the player has in front of him.

After each player has received their 2 cards, there is a round of betting that begins with the player to the left of the button. There are also mandatory bets called blinds that must be placed into the pot before the start of each round of betting.

After the betting phase has been completed, each player then reveals their cards. The player with the best 5-card poker hand wins the pot.
